About the Artist
Dean F. Merritt, 1914-1982, was an American artist who is most famous for his vibrant abstract paintings and his large scale metal and wood sculptures. During his art career spanning from 1941-1981, he created about 1,200 artworks including oil paintings, watercolor paintings and various material sculptures. His works include religious art, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits characterized by bold colors and dramatic and expressive brushwork.
Raised in Clovis, New Mexico, he began showing a natural talent for art early in his life and is considered a self-taught artist. After his tour of duty in the United States Navy during World War II, he pursued his professional career in chiropractic medicine all while developing his artwork. He painted because he said that is what God intended for him to do. In the late 1940s, he began teaching art in Clovis a couple evenings a week; his reputation quickly spread and his demand for classes was unending. Still to this day, his many students revere him as a staple to their own art career.
During his art career, Dr. Merritt's unusual style brought him recognition both nationally and internationally and his work was exhibited in many shows and museums.
Currently, the majority of Dean F. Merritt's art collection is proudly displayed by various art collectors, family and friends.
